How to save GAS and LIGHT?
Saving electricity and gas bills is not only a way to reduce costs, but also means helping the environment and avoiding a waste of resources. It is not just a choice; it is a duty. That energy saving is a lot of debate also discussed on the web. But how to save on gas and electricity bills? The answer lies in energy efficiency, which makes it possible to reduce consumption without lowering the quality of life standards. Consuming less without giving up your comforts can be done.
The premise for raising awareness was a must. So here are the tricks to save gas and light. At the bottom of the page there is space to comment if you know any other tricks to integrate.
How to save your GAS bill?
Equip yourself with heat pumps
How to save on your gas bill? A saving solution is represented by the use of heat pumps. These tools make it possible to use renewable energy that is dispersed in the environment or to exploit the geothermal energy lying underground. Heat pumps use both electricity and fossil fuels, which are polluting; however, they exploit these energy sources more efficiently than traditional boilers.
There are various types. The pump with an air-to-air exchange, but its performance decreases when the outside temperature drops below 7 degrees. In areas where temperatures are more rigid, the most suitable pumps are those with the geothermal exchange. The initial investment can be recovered in less than ten years because tax deductions of up to 65% are envisaged.
Combine the boiler with a solar thermal system
Those who use a traditional boiler can always combine it with a solar thermal system. The costs are reduced by up to 90% on the production of domestic hot water. Very common is the one with the natural circulation that you see above the roofs with the boiler in sight. These are the cheapest and least efficient ones. To approach 90%, a forced circulation system must be purchased. It can be recognized by the storage boiler because it is detached from the solar collectors like the one in the photo.
You save up to 40% for heating with solar thermal. For heating, however, the matter is a bit more complex. To approach 40%, underfloor heating and a condensing boiler should be combined. The cost is around one thousand euros per square meter. The panels are particularly recommended because they exploit the clean energy of the sun and produce hot water even in winter. In summer, you will turn off the boiler. They are guaranteed for 30 years and resist shocks and hail.
Replace the fixtures if they are in single glass wood or aluminum without thermal break
It will seem an irrelevant detail, however, it is essential to have fixtures in the house that do not disperse heat to the outside. The replacement of the fixtures does not involve a prohibitive expense and is an investment with a long-term economic return. Furthermore, tax concessions are also provided for their replacement.
For the choice you can choose the “PVC made in Italy” windows with double glazing with low emissivity, they do not need excessive maintenance. EU PVCs are cheaper but use compounds for colder climates. PVC has a film applied that can mimic wood as well.
The thermal break aluminum frames are also very good. Aluminum is eternal and unlike PVC it is painted. Guarantees the same performance as PVC.
The finished price for PVC and Aluminum is approximately € 400.00 per square meter of windowed area.
The wooden window frames are of a higher level but definitely more expensive than the first two choices.
Use thermostatic valves
To save on the gas bill, an excellent idea are thermostatic valves. They allow individual homes to be autonomous as regards the regulation of the temperature in the house. The mechanism is simple: the heat is dosed and sorted in the various rooms with different settings, usually with values from 0 to 5. Once the room temperature reaches the optimal level, the valve closes and the radiator remains excluded from the system. Conversely, the valve reopens if the temperature drops, and the radiator reactivates.
Even if there is no one in the house, it is possible to set the radiators to a minimum and then increase the temperature when you return home. Usually, in the condominium, the valves are combined with a heat meter. The meter calculates with great precision the distribution of the heating costs of each tenant. Installing a thermostatic valve costs between 50 and 100 euros per radiator.
Install heat reflective panels behind the radiators
On how to save gas another trick that can be done inexpensively is to use heat-reflective panels. These panels are very expensive and can be installed by anyone. There is no need for glue and stops fixed to the wall, these are held with hooks hanging from the radiator brackets. Taking outdoor photos with a thermal imaging camera you can immediately notice that a radiator facing outwards disperses heat. By placing this simple panel behind the radiators, the heat will be reflected back into the house.
I recommend installing this system only when you have the radiators facing an external wall. Even more useful if the wall where the radiant body is installed is thinner than the rest of the walls. Egg radiator under the window.
Check your rates
It is always important to check your methane gas supply tariff. The market has been liberalized, allowing many operators to enrich the range of offers. Today, consumers can choose between the various proposals and find the package that best suits their needs. You can ask for a quote to evaluate your savings options. You can save up to 10% on your gas bill.
How to save your electricity bill?
There are also strategies that can be planned with regard to saving on lighting costs; implemented allow to substantially cut the cost of the bill. Often out of distraction it happens to forget a lighted lamp in an environment where there is no one.
Replace the bulbs
One important fact should not be overlooked: 12% of the electricity that a family consumes derives from the improper use of the lighting system. This is why it is very smart to have timers installed in the various rooms that provide for automatic switching off of the bulbs. Today on the market it is possible to buy low consumption fluorescent bulbs and LED lamps; however, care must be taken to purchase brands that allow an adequate level of safety. It is always good not to risk buying defective or non-compliant products to save a few euros.
The led bulbs also have a longer average life. An incandescent lamp has a life of 1000 hours while a LED lamp 30000. This also allows you to save on the cost of replacement. A led bulb costs more is true. However, energy and maintenance savings of up to 20 euros per month are calculated for 8 light bulbs lit 6 hours a day.
Losing bad habits
The waste of energy is really linked to distraction and bad habits established over time. It is always good to turn off the TV completely if you are not watching it. It might be useful to use power strips with a light switch. You save up to 10% on light consumption, also safeguarding the life of the equipment. Power surges cause problems with computers, TV, and DVD player power boards and can cause fires. The equipment can also be disconnected manually through the use of clock sockets, those equipped with the so-called “knights”. This particular type of socket sets the time when the appliances will automatically disconnect from the network.
Remember that every appliance connected to an outlet, even if I apparently turn it off, consumes energy. Considering to unplug all the plugs when you are not using an electrical appliance could save 50/100 euros a year.
How to save with photovoltaics
Another innovative solution is to produce energy autonomously, for example by adopting a photovoltaic system with batteries, ideal for self-consumption. The initial investment, rather important, is amortized in about 10 years. Also in this case there are tax deductions to encourage the use of photovoltaics. Consider that the price of photovoltaics has dropped significantly.
A 3 KW photovoltaic system today costs around 5000 euros on a turnkey basis. The problem, however, is not so much money but space. To make 3 kw, about 20 square meters of panels are needed. If you live in an apartment building this space is difficult to find.
Another problem with photovoltaics is energy storage. The best-suited lithium batteries cost a tombola.
Buy efficient appliances
How to save starts with the purchase of household appliances? Just pay a little attention to the products to choose: the best ones bear the letter A or B on the label. This indication can be found on the colored adhesive label present on all appliances: they indicate the efficiency of the appliance. In addition to the letter, you will have to pay attention to the colored stripe. If it is green, it means that the efficiency is maximum and the product will probably be more expensive. However, it will allow for subsequent savings, gradually reducing the cost of electricity bills.
I recommend not getting too high with the energy class. You risk spending too much money in vain. Consider an energy class A Maximum A + if you want to take advantage of the appliance bonus.
Identify custom rates
The liberalized electricity market, as in the case of gas, has expanded the offer for consumers. It is possible to identify the rate that best suits the needs of each family unit, also according to habits. For example, if there is no one at home during the week, the bi-hourly rate will save electricity. In that particular case, consumption is concentrated in the evening and on weekends. Just take a look at the various offers on the market to save on your bill.
Other useful tips on how to save on your electricity bill
Other small tips, apparently insignificant but actually very useful:
- activate the “sleep” function when you have the habit of falling asleep while watching TV; easily set from the remote control;
- use the washing machine at temperatures below 60 degrees; at 40 degrees most fabrics are effectively washed;
- place the fridge away from heat sources, i.e. radiators and oven;
- before using the dishwasher, remove the dirt by hand, to avoid the risk of clogging the filter; once this operation has been completed, only one wash cycle will suffice;
- LED televisions consume less energy than a plasma TV, just as a laptop consumes about half the energy of a PC.
